Catherine Hardwicke is one of the most diverse filmmakers working today. Earlier this year, she helmed the comedy Mafia Mamma and her latest feature Prisoner’s Daughter is a heavy duty drama headlined by Kate Beckinsale and Brian Cox. Hardwicke talked about her latest film, a feature that inspires her (Angelo, My Love) and her recent trip to Barcelona.
With The Flood, Louis Mandylor works once again with director Brandon Slagle. The pair are friends and collaborators, and earlier this year they worked together on Breakout. Last year, Slagel directed Battle for Saipan which starred Mandylor. CinemAddicts co-host Eric Holmes is a fan of Mandylor’s work, and this interview gives an in-depth look at his acting and directing career.
Now playing exclusively in theaters, Cobweb is tour de force filmmaking from director Samuel Bodin. The narrative centers on Peter (Woody Norman), an eight-year-old who believes there is a mysterious figure living inside his family home. Bodin talked about his cinematic approach to Cobweb and why Norman was perfect for the lead.
Gia Crovatin stars in filmmaker Neil LaBute’s new feature Fear The Night. The narrative centers on eight women whose lives are endangeered by several criminals. Trapped in a remote farmhouse in the California hill, the women are trying to ward off the masked intruders. Crovatin, a frequent collaborator with LaBute, talked to Deepest Dream about Fear The Night.
Cillian Murphy is J. Robert Oppenheimer in OPPENHEIMER, written, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan.
Christopher Nolan’s IMAX-shot Oppenheimer hits theaters July 21, and even though it’s July, maybe Oscar season has come early for this movie. Cillian Murphy has starred in several Nolan movies, and now he is front and center as J. Robert Oppenheimer. The Peaky Blinders star talked about being “blown away” by the entire experience.
Genre hopping is part of Nicky Whelan’s acting resume. She had a traumatic encounter with a shark in 2002’s Maneater and now she is soaked in water and dealing with alligators in The Flood. I also enjoyed the action thriller The Best Man, released earlier this year and really appreciated 2021’s underrated drama Last Night in Rozzie. She has a total salt of the earth personality, as you can see from her latest interview with CinemAddicts co-host Eric Holmes.
The life of Syd Barrett is spotlighted in filmmaker Roddy Bogawa’s latest documentary Have You Got It Yet? The Story of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd. Co-directed by late cover designer Storm Thorgerson, the project was a labor of love that took over a decade to hit theaters. Thorgerson passed in 2013, and Bogawa talked to Deepest Dream about the documentary and friendship with Thorgerson.
On the latest episode of CinemAddicts, I reviewed the Netflix feature Bird Box Barcelona. The movie, directed by Alex Pastor and David Pastor, stars Mario Casas and Georgina Campbell. It’s a spoiler free review, since Netflix outlined plot points reviewers could not mention. I totally agree that detailing certain aspects of Bird Box Barcelona would partially ruin the experience. Below is my spoiler free review of Bird Box Barcelona!
Casper Van Dien’s signature role was in director Paul Verhoeven’s iconic Starship Troopers. In the ensuing years Van Dien has carved out a diversifed resume, and recently he was seen in the first rate indie Daughter. He co-stars with Nicky Whelan and Louis Mandylor in The Flood, an escapist fare that interviewer Eric Holmes desribed as “Assault on Precinct 13 with aligators.” Full interview with Casper Van Dien is in our post.
Are you a fan of Michael Mann’sHeat? Have you seen 13 Hours, TV’s The Unit, The Killing of Two Lovers, and The Integrity of Joseph Chambers? As a fan of Max Martini and Clayne Crawford’s work, I was on board with their latest movie The Channel. Director William Kaufman brings touches of Heat amidst an indie budget, and this ambitious feature absolutely nailed it. Crawford and Martini talked to Deepest Dream about their close friendship and how that fed into The Channel.
