Director Andrew Slater’s documentary Echo in the Canyon starts off with Jakob Dylan asking Tom Petty who to properly pronounce the Rickenbacker guitar. It’s an amusing opener, as Petty strums a bit before jokingly tells the viewer that the rest will cost too much. Actually, Echo in the Canyon is a priceless and value added look at the merging of folk and rock, a blend that was honed and crafted up in the hills of Laurel Canyon, California. Petty, who passed in 2017, was a fan of that era, and he is just one of the many reasons to check out the documentary.

Perception, fantasy, as well as a healthy dose of tragedy populates the world of Love Is Blind, a romantic drama with a rather intriguing premise. Bess (Shannon Tarbet) is a 24-year-old living her dad (Matthew Broderick) in New York’s Hudson Valley. Suffering from “selective perception,” she is unable to see her mother (Chloe Sevigny), whom she believes passed away years ago. Director Monty Whitebloom talked to us about his intricately woven feature whose strengths lie in the performances of Tarbet and co-stars Benjamin Walker and Aidan Turner.

‘Doctor Sleep’ Review: ‘The Shining’ Sequel You Didn’t Know You Needed

Many people, including myself, consider Stanley Kubrick’s version of The Shining to be a classic horror movie. Therefore, a sequel seemed ill-advised and unnecessary, at best, and a disaster-in-the-making, at worst. But, I decided to give this movie a chance and tried to view it with an open mind. After all, Mike Flanagan, the director of Doctor Sleep, has slowly built up a solid resume of horror projects.  Oculus, Hush, and Gerald’s Game were all lean, effective movies. More importantly, Flanagan’s sprawling miniseries remake of The Haunting of Hill House illustrated his ability to tackle and reimagine a beloved film classic.

For years, I had no idea why, after absolutely loving Different Seasons, another Stephen King book reading experience would never (at least to this day) happen. That answer was found from a Ewan McGregor sound bite from the Doctor Sleep premiere, and it’s featured in the following post.

“The Man” can be racism, inequality, or whatever holds us back in general, and The Banker sheds a light on the audacious exploits of businessmen Bernard Garrett (Anthony Mackie) and Joe Morris (Samuel L. Jackson) in the 1960s. The true story, which reunities Mackie with The Adjustment Bureau filmmaker George Nolfi, is headed to theaters next month.
