Men in Black and Get Shorty director Barry Sonnenfeld has signed on to direct a movie based on Project Alpha, the ambitious ruse that was led by James ‘The Amazing’ Randi and fake psychics Steve Shaw and Michael Edwards . Their trickery was featured in the documentary An Honest Liar, a project that is based on Randi’s life.
Part of the trio’s operation included spoon bending, blowing fuses and moving objects in a closed, transparent container. After two years in the spotlight, they publicly revealed their hoax at a 1979 Discover magazine press conference.
Sonnenfeld, who will next direct Kevin Spacey in “Nine Lives,” checked out “An Honest Liar” at Telluride Monuntainfilm and was immediately captivated with the material: “Not only did I love An Honest Liar, but I knew there was an excellent narrative film to be made out of this story, with James Randi playing the ‘behind the curtain’ puppeteer.”
An Honest Liar filmmakers Tyler Measom and Justin Weinstein will also serve as producers on Sonnenfeld’s project.
