“Creatures of Chaos,” a 2D animated short from filmmaker Asavari Kumar, makes its world premiere at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. Kumar and producer Siddarth Kumar talked about why they wanted to spotlight and explore mental health in their short. CinemAddicts co-host Eric Holmes describes “Creatures of Chaos” as “beautiful,” and the filmmakers elaborated on their two years in the making “passion project.

Creatures of Chaos

The idea for “Creatures of Choas” started with Asavari Kumar building the world with ceramic creatures she sculpted at her local pottery studio. An initial plan for an augmented reality/live action hybrid ultimately evolved into a collage style 2D animated short film.

“For us, it definitely did stem from wanting to talk about mental health challenges and the shame and stigma surrounding it,” said Asavari Kumar, a co-founder of the studio Supernova Design. “Sid and I, we both grew up in India and a lot of Asian cultures tend to have a lot of shame and stigma attached to mental health challenges or discussing mental health challenges and there’s a lot of dismissal and equating someone with mental health challenges.”

“I think that is a very incorrect view,” added Kumar. “And as I moved to the US, I felt like people were a lot more open in terms of talking about it. Which is not to say that, it’s a thing that’s solved. That (was) the genesis of (‘Creatures of Chaos’).”
