Kaantha is an epic Indian film that centers on visionary director Ayya (Samuthirakani) intense clash with lead actor T.K. Mahadevan (Dulquer Salmaan). Bhagyashri Borse co-stars as Kumari, the lead actress who is torn between these ego-driven artists. Filmmaker Selvamani Selvaraj talked to Deepest Dream about his intricate filmmaking process behind Kaantha. During the interview, Selvaraj reflects on why filmmaking, for him, is a spiritual process.

“The theme that I wanted to explore was about ego and creation,” said Selvamani Selvaraj. “That something is created from most, from a place of surrender, right? You are surrendering to the power of music. Right? But once it’s created, you get this feeling that, that’s mine. It came from me and this whole thing about ego. So that was a starting point for this (movie).”

“When you have reasons for everything, it becomes very easy to take decisions,” added Selvaraj. “Once I knew that this is the theme I’m exploring and I got my characters, I had a bunch of characters, then naturally it became this relationship drama between these three people.”
Check out my full interview with Selvaraj below, and I also review (and highly recommend) Kaantha on this week’s CinemAddicts podcast:
