Inspired by true events, “Sovereign” centers on Jerry and Joseph Kane (Nick Offerman and Jacob Tremblay), a father and son who hold an anti-establishment philosphy. Their worldview places them into an inevitable confrontation with Police Chief Jim Bouchart (Dennis Quaid). Written and directed by Christian Swegal, “Sovereign” is one of this week’s top picks from CinemAddicts co-host Eric Holmes.

“Sovereign” marks Christian Swegal’s feature directing debut. Swegal was also a co-writer of the 2018 feature “Proud Mary” which had Taraji P. Henson in the lead.

Rounding out the “Sovereign” ensemble are Thomas Mann, Nancy Travis, and Martha Plimpton. Although the movie has its genre elements, the picture, according to CinemAddicts co-host Eric Holmes, is more of a character study.
