Matthew McConaughey And Anne Hathaway Go Boating In Murderous ‘Serenity’ Trailer

With January reserved as a veritable dumping ground for the year’s worst movies, Serenity’s prospects, upon first impression, may not be too healthy. That being said, this Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway headlined film has one ace up its sleeve: filmmaker/writer Steven Knight. Serenity centers on a fishing boat captain (Matthew McConaughey) who is living a closed off life in a tropical enclave called Plymouth Island. His sense of peace is interrupted after his ex-wife (Anne Hathaway, who worked with McConaughey in Interstellar) comes a calling with her abusive new husband (Jason Clarke). A fishing trip turns deadly, and now this captain must put his life in order, as sleeping with the fishes isn’t exactly his style!

Though January’s film slate is filled with indies and studio driven drivel that most moviegoers would soon like to forget, Serenity comes from the mind of Steven Knight, the filmmaker behind Locke (which featured one of Tom Hardy’s best performances) and the creator of series Taboo (also featuring Hardy) and Peaky Blinders.

I’m also loving the Serenity trailer, which hints that Hathaway’s character may actually be a total femme fatale. The ending of the clip, which has McConaughey softly uttering “Where in the world are we” also caught my attention. One wonders if Knight’s balmy island thriller is also a slight homage to writer James M. Cain (Double Indemnity, The Postman Always Rings Twice), as this film has noir dripping all over it. 

The film opens nationwide January 25, and I’m betting this movie, at the very least, will have its share of interesting moments. Feel free to share your thoughts on the second trailer below!
