Some would call it a match made in heaven (or hell?), as Slayer has teamed with trailblazing comics publisher Dark Horse (Hellboy, Sin City) for the three-part comic series Repentless. The first installment, Slayer: Repentless, Vol. 1 debuts December 16.

The storyline is inspired from the no-holds barred, violent music videos “Repentless” and “You Against You” from BJ McDonnell, the filmmaker behind 2003’s Hatchet III. Both vids feature the same jail as its backdrop, with Machete star Danny Trejo making a cameo in “Repentless” as one of the criminals who start a prison riot (“You Against You” features a one-man wrecking crew who doles out bloody revenge at a remote roadside diner).

Writer Jon Schnepp says in an interview with Rolling Stone that the series will not just be a blood soaked narrative. “It’s a road journey – like a road movie of horror – and it goes across many states,” said Schnepp, who adds that the series will be ‘harsh’ and ‘gritty.’ “It’s a straight-up human story of terror, like brother against brother, people feeding off hatred, the stupidity and horror of humanity.”

The standard cover was created by acclaimed artist Glenn Fabry (Preacher, Hellblazer) with the skeleton infused variant crafted by Eric Powell (The Goon, Hillbilly).

Slayer appears at Comic-Con starting Thursday, July 21 with a sold out performance at the San Diego House of Blues. Signings take place Friday, July 22 at Nuclear Blast America (booth #501) from 1-2 p.m. The group and the creative crew from the comics will stop by the Dark Horse Comics booth (#2615) from 3-4 p.m.
