Shekhar Kapur Talks ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It,’ AI Filmmaking, and Himalayan Glaciers

Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur (Elizabeth, Elizabeth: The Golden Age) returns to epic filmmaking with What’s Love Got To Do With It. On the surface, the feature maybe labeled as a romantic comedy. Once you dive deeper into the film, it is an in-depth look at uncondotional family love and the ties that bind. Though I highly recommend What’s Love Got To Do With It, I had a few more life questions to ask Kapur during our 9-minute chat. What’s Love Got To Do With It? centers on Zoe (Lily James), an award winning documentary filmmaker who is making a movie on her childhood friend Kazim’s (Shazad Latif) assisted marriage. Emma Thompson co-stars as Zoe’s free-spirited mother, with Shabana Azmi playing Kazim’s mom. Sajal Ali plays Maymouna, the woman betrothed to Kazim.

Prep for the film started with director Shekhar Kapur was in a remote area of the world.

“Lily James and I spoke,” said Kapur. I was in the Himalayas photographing retreating glaciers and she was in London doing during the lockdown. We talked a lot about what love means. What intimacy means. All of that without even talking about the script. Then we finally met a few months in London and we started to explore the script. But by that time, I knew her and she knew me. I knew. We were able to explore each other’s ‘human-ness.'”

Being human is at the forefornt with the expanse of AI technology. I close the interview and ask Kapur if AI will eventually be the go-to solution for making movies.

“Cinema is a technological medium,” said Kapur. “There’s absolutely going to be all these attempts at AI (with) Chat GPT. I’ve tried it. And I’ve tested myself. I’m still better. One thing AI will never know is fear. “
