Over at the CinemAddicts podcast we spotlight indie and under the radar movies that are coming out each Friday. New films that you can watch starting today in theaters and/or on Digital include I Can Only Imagine 2, Kokuho, Last Ride, The Dreadful, This Is Not A Test, One Mile: Chapter One, One Mile: Chapter Two, and Last Ride. Listen to our podcast for the reviews and more insights on these respective flicks!

I Can Only Imagine 2 – Lionsgate

I Can Only Imagine 2 continues the journey of MercyMe’s Bart Millard (John Michael Finley). Milo Ventimiglia joins the crew as Tim Timmons, a music artist who must overcome his own struggles and sees Millard as an inspiration. The original movie was a hit and has inspired its share of cinephiles and music lovers, and I Can Only Imagine 2 also gives deeper insight into Timmons’ perseverance. Check out I Can Only Imagine 2 in theaters. I saw the movie back in January and recommend this faith based and family centric feature.

Here’s my interview with Finley, Millard and co-star Sammy Dell:

Kokuho – Photo courtesy of GKIDS

Now playing nationwide, Kokuho is Japan’s highest gorssing live action movie as it has taken in over $111 million at the box-office. It is also an Oscar nominee for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Starring Ryo Yoshizawa, the picture is based on the original novel by Shuichi Yoshida. CinemAddicts co-host Bruce Purkey describes the visually eye-catching film as a “high stakes” epic. Check out his review on YouTube or through CinemAddicts:

Last Ride – Quiver Distribution

Directed and written by Cinqué Lee and produced by Spike Lee, Last Ride centers on three American boys who are straned in a cable car with just their wits and a dead body! Suspended midway in the mountains of Norway, these boys try their best to stay alive and get to safety! The picture is now available on Digital and On Demand. Purkey also reviewed the movie on this week’s CinemAddicts:

Marcia Gay Harden in The Dreadful. Lionsgate

CinemAddicts co-host Eric Holmes and I are fans of filmmaker Natasha Kermani (Abraham’s Boys, Lucky), and her new movie The Dreadful is now out in theaters, Digital and On Demand. This gothic horror/thriller, starring Sophie Turner, Kit Harington, and Marcia Gay Harden, is inspired by the 1964 Japanese film Onibaba (itself inspired by an age-old tale). The Dreadful boasts crisp storytelling, an immersive score by Jamal Green, and another standout performance from Marcia Gay Harden.

One Mile: Chapter One – Republic Pictures (A Paramount Pictures Label)

Now available on Digital, One Mile: Chapter One and One Mile: Chapter Two center on a special forces Army vet (Ryan Phillippe) who, along with his daughter (Amélie Hoeferle) face the threat of a hostile, off-grid community led by a morally twisted leader (C. Thomas Howell). Eric and I also recommend this movie, and it’s a value added film if you are a Phillippe and Howell fan. Check out my interview with C. Thomas Howell for further insights on the film, and our review is featured on CinemAddicts:

This Is Not A Test – Indepdendent Film Company / Shudder

Eric Holmes also recommends the teenager/zombie movie This Is Not A Test, a feature headlined by Olivia Holt. Currently at 44% on Rotten Tomatoes, the feature has received its share of negative reviews. That said, I’m going to trust Eric and give this movie a shot this weekend. The feature is now playing in theaters

Other movies covered on CinemAddicts include Bruce Purkey’s take on the feature Happyend (now streaming on Criterion Channel) and Eric’s thoughts on Good Luck Have Fun Don’t Die.

Eric also saw Psycho Killer, and I plan to watch that movie this weekend as well (our review will be up on CinemAddicts next week).
