There are a ton of catchy songs featured in Teen Spirit, but the one that really stood out for me was Elle Fanning’s take on the Sigrid song “Don’t Kill My Vibe.” During the Teen Spirit interviews, I asked Minghella about why he chose that track for a pivotal point in the movie.

Set in the Isle of Wight, Teen Spirit centers on Violet (Elle Fanning), an introspective teen who enters a local singing competition to pursue her pop star dreams. Zlatko Buric is Vlad, an ex-opera singer who spends more time with alcohol than people. Vlad ultimately becomes her manager, and their unlikely partnership, as well as Violet’s determined ambition to change her life, powers Teen Spirit.

With songs from Robyn, Ellie Goulding, Annie Lennox, No Doubt, and Carly Rae Jepsen at his disposal, Minghella has an array of tunes to breathe a ton of energy into his narrative. It was Sigrid’s “Don’t Kill My Vibe,” in my opinion, that really struck home for me. More importantly, it evoked a personal response from Max Minghella during one fateful evening:

“It was just one of those moments, it was like the middle of the night, I strolled into my house,” said Minghella. “My Sonos was on. I was feeling very defeated – at the end of my tethers – thinking this movie was never going to happen, and this song came on, and it really spoke not only to how I was feeling in that moment in my real life but also how I felt Violet was probably feeling at that moment in the movie.”
