Filmmaker Lowell Dean’s “Die Alone” is billed as a horror thriller and although that description is apt, the narrative also has a ton of humanity amidst all that darkness. Dean and actor Douglas Smith talked to Deepest Dream about their feature which is now out in theaters and available on Digital and On Demand.
Ethan (Douglas Smith) lives in a world where it is hard for humans to trust one another. An outbreak has lead to a transformation of Earth’s environment, and there is a good chance that his missing girlfriend (Kimberly-Sue Murray) is dead. With the help of a survivalist (Carrie-Anne Moss), Ethan keeps on searching for his girlfriend, but his bouts with amnesia is certainly not helping his cause.
“It’s an almost thankless role,” said Dean about the role of Ethan. “Because he has that linear task of ‘I must find my girlfriend.’ He comes into contact with many people, primarily Mae (Carrie-Anne Moss) who is over the apocalypse and over other people. He is almost like a puppy dog who need to be rescued and who will certainly die life to his own devices.” Dean adds that Douglas having a “nice soul” as one of the reasons why viewers can sympathize with Ethan’s plight.
“I just tried to keep grounding it to my want,” said Douglas Smith. “That’s a very actor-y talk but what is your want? What is the obstacle between you and that. The Stanislavski seven questions. Now I’m getting really dorky!”
Towards the end of the interview, Smith gets even dorkier by doing a Billy Crystal scene from “When Harry Met Sally.” Smith wanted to point out how he disagrees with Denis Villeneuve’s opinion of movies being solely remembered for its visuals.
