‘Coyote Vs. Acme’ Review: 5 Reasons To Watch This “Looney” Tale

There are more than five reasons why I love Coyote Vs. Acme, but this post will give you a breakdown of some of the film’s finest aspects. 1. Support Coyote Vs. Acme And Show Warner Bros. What They’re Missing!

Back in 2022, Warner Bros. shelved Coyote Vs. Acme and used the feature as a tax write-off. Several years later, Ketchup Entertainment purchased the film’s distribution rights for $50 million. That is a lot of money to punk down for a discarded film, but from where I sit the gamble paid off. Quality wise, the movie is a first rate cinematic experience and kudos to Ketchup Entertainment for giving the movie a proper theatrical release. Hopefully cinephiles and Looney Tunes fans will support the movie and make Warner Bros. regret their decision!

2. Samy Burch’s Fantastic Screenplay Elevates The Material

Samy Burch, as evidenced in her previous screenplays (May December, Late Fame), knows how to weave storylines with a refreshingly unpredictable flair. Though the main draw for Coyote vs. Acme will be for the eye-catching visuals, the story takes a couple of unpredictable turns that elevated the storyline. Amidst all the jokes, machine gun dialogue, and madcap action, there is also a beating heart to the narrative, and much of that credit goes to Burnch’s script. James Gunn, Jeremy Slater, and Burch were also given story credit for the film (with Burch receiving sole screenplay credit).

3. A Tribute To Looney Tunes But Not Fan Service

Huge credit goes to the Coyote vs. Acme team for providing a ton of love to the Looney Tunes universe by parading a healthy share of its characters on the silver screen. Director Dave Green, though understanding the history he is working with, is not stuck in the past. Coyote vs. Acme implements these characters without detracting from the storyline’s focus, making the movie feel like a singular story and not simply a celebration of a golden era of animation. Also, if you are expecting a huge role for Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Porky Pig, you’be come to the wrong place. This is a Wile E. Coyote centered feature which also has ample enough scenes for the Roadrunner.

4. A Memorable Will Forte Is Film’s Biggest Surprise

Will Forte stars in Coyote vs. Acme as Kevin Avery, a lawyer who makes his money on small settlement injury cases that usually involve cartoon characters. One of the film’s subplots deals with Avery’s attempts to finally grow a backbone and become a real lawyer. Wile E. Coyote hired Avery to defend him in his lawsuit agains ACME, and watching Avery gradually come to his own is one of the story’s pleasant surprises. Usually the human characters in live action/animation hybrids are forgettable, but thanks to a locked in performance from Forte, his character does not get overshadowed by Wile E. Coyote or the Roadrunner!

5. It’s An Action Driven Courtroom Drama!

Director Dave Green cited Michael Mann’s The Insider as an influence for Coyote vs. Acme. Even though it’s a family, there is a healthy bit of courtroom drama/conspiracy thriller mixed into the narrative. And since Wile E. Coyote is a troublemaker who uses a ton of ACME products for his futile chase of the Roadrunner, there is a bit of action in the film as well. Running at 102 minutes, Coyote vs. Acme is a surprisingly brisk tale.
