Lord of Misrule, directed by Orphan: First Kill filmmaker William Brent Bell, is a horror feature that both CinemAddicts co-host Eric Holmes and I recommend. Rebecca Holland (Tuppence Middleton) is a the new priest of a small town. When her daughter Grace (EvieTempleton) goes missing during the harvest festival, Rebecca is determined to find her daughter. Holmes interviewed William Brent Bell, and the filmmaker talked about the interesting mythology behind Lord of Misrule!
Director Emerald Fennell’s (Promising Young Woman) new feature Saltburn, which has received tons of critical praise, is headed to Prime Video on December 22. The ensemble includes Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, and Rosamund Pike. Make sure to add this feature on your Prime Video watchlist!
Director/writer Javier Reyna’s (Regionrat) new movie Due Justice is now out in theaters and available on Digital and On Demand. Reyna’s path to filmmaking was borne out of determination and perseverance. He talked about his early days as he chased his directing dreams. One of the steps along the way included working on the Barbra Streisand movie The Mirror Has Two Faces. Reyna talked to CinemAddicts host Eric Holmes about Due Justice, an action thriller starring Kellan Lutz and Jeff Fahey, and how sneaking into the Sony Studios lot actually put him in good stead!
Filmmaker Andrew Jenks and producer Dan Goodman have teamed up to deliver the engaging and insightful documentary Billion Dollar Babies: The True Story of the Cabbage Patch Kids. Narrated by Neil Patrick Harris, the feature is now playing in theaters. The documentary, which is recommended by the CinemAddicts crew, marks the 40th year anniversary of the Cabbage Patch Kid debut! Full interview with Jenks and Goodman are in the post!
For Journey To Bethlehem, filmmaker Adam Anders co-wrote the screenplay and worked on the music (with wife Nikki Anders and Peer Astrom). Anders admitted he may not wear all those hats for his next directing project, but to get the story right, he had to be the person behind the camera. Journey to Bethlehem, which has received a stellar Rotten Tomatoes score, is now playing in theaters. Anders talked to Deepest Dream about his “journey” in making this first rate feature.
Oscar nominated filmmaker Steven Ascher (Troublesome Creek: A Midwestern) directed Looking Forward, a short essay film which explores how “our feelings about the future affect how our lives unfold.” Ascher elaborates on that theme on a personal level in the following interview. With the use of black and white stills and implementation of AI, Looking Forward explores one’s interweaving relationship with time and space. Ascher talked to CinemAddicts co-host Eric Holmes about “looking foward” with his storytelling.
This week’s CinemAddicts features a couple of movie gems that are worth checking out. Topping the list is the new documentary The Disappearance of Shere Hite from IFC Films and the horror-thriller Do Not Disturb from Dark Star Pictures. Listen to episode 216 below and hopefully you will find a movie to watch over the weekend!
Matthew Yerby makes his feature directing debut with The Dirty South, a crime thriller centering on a bartender (Willa Holland) who is attempting to keep her establishment from being bought out by the small town’s most powerful businessman (Dermot Mulroney). Shane West plays the criminal who aids her in the quest for more money.
This Much We Know, the directorial debut from L. Frances Henderson, is loosely based on John D’Agata’s book About A Mountain. The documentary attempts to connect the suicide of Levi Presley, who spoke to D’Agata on a suicide hotline a few hours before ending his life, along with the storage of nuclear waste in the nearby Yucca Mountain. An exploration of Las Vegas as the suicide capitol of the U.S. as well as Henderson’s working through her close friend’s suicide, are all covered in this ambitious feature. This film delivered a similar impact to Kirsten Johnson’sCameraperson, and I opened up the interview asking if that documentary was an influence.
As a fan of Tragedy Girls, I was looking forward to interviewing director Tyler MacIntyre for It’s A Wonderful Knife. Both CinemAddicts co-host Bruce Purkey and I enjoyed the movie, and if you want a holiday-themed slasher film with a bit of heart and levity, this one should be a perfect movie choice. Full interview with MacIntyre is featured below!
