‘The Delicacy’ Interview With Director Jason Wise

0
Directed by Jason Wise (SOMM), The Delicacy centers on how the sea urchin is harvested, eaten, and why it has become such a popular staple in the culinary world. The film’s heart and soul, however, resides with the sea urchin divers who are spotlighted in the documentary. Wise talked about his compelling new documentary and explained why, as much as millions of people love uni, The Delicacy pays close attention to the people who help bring sea urchins to our table.

Bruce Purkey Reviews “Gloriously Atmospheric” ‘The Innocents’

0
The Innocents (1961), directed by Jack Clayton, may be unfamiliar to those younger than 35, but it is a gloriously atmospheric film that deserves to be seen by the modern movie-going audience. With so many of us looking for streaming options, while we spend more time at home, what better time to watch some movies that one might not normally consider?

Tom Hardy Goes Gangbusters In Riveting And Inspired ‘Capone’

I’m a sucker for films that have a “go big or go home mentality,” and after the failure of Fantastic Four, director Josh Trank could have played a much safer game. Capone is a bigtime risk for Trank, and against all odds he comes up with one of this year’s most audacious films (Capone, in short, gives no f**ks).

Review: ‘Dogs Don’t Wear Pants’ Is Daring Cinema Available On Shudder

0
Dogs Don’t Wear Pants, directed by J.P. Valkeapaa, is a Finnish film that finds its way to American audiences as a Shudder exclusive. For those who think Shudder is a streaming service only offering horror fare, movies like Dogs Don’t Wear Pants proves that it is also the home to some of the most daring and experimental films currently being produced.

Dogs Don’t Wear Pants follows Juha (Pekka Strang), a surgeon who is trying to deal with a recent tragedy. He is coasting through life, unable to deal with his grief, when he has a chance encounter with a BDSM sex worker, Mona (Krista Kosonen). He finds himself obsessed, trying to find a way to cope and understand his emotions through his new exploration of submission.

This movie is unconventional, non-exploitative, surprisingly emotional, and ultimately cathartic. For those who are able to explore daring and challenging cinema, Dogs Don’t Wear Pants comes highly recommended.

Beanie Feldstein Captivates In Bold And Bracing ‘How to Build A Girl’

Beanie Feldstein as “Johanna Morrigan” and Cast in Coky Giedroyc’s HOW TO BUILD A GIRL. Courtesy of IFC Films. An IFC Films Release.
One of the reasons why Stand By Me is a stellar coming-of-age feature lies in its unabashed look at the less than sunner side of life. Beanie Feldstein’s high wattage smile dominates How to Build A Girl, but this movie goes beyond feel good tropes and simply delivers an unflinching and memorable tale.

Review: Trash Level Storytelling With ‘The Lodge’

0
The Lodge is the latest prestige horror outing by writer/directing duo, Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala. Both made a splash with Goodnight Mommy in 2014. Like Goodnight Mommy, The Lodge has been garnering a divided response by critics. After a stint in the festival circuit and a very limited theatrical run earlier this year, The Lodge is finally available for the masses to view.
