There are so many things to love about Call Me By Your Name, but at its root the film holds a universal truth and depth of feeling that is has been or will be shared by most people. Set in 1983 Italy, Call Me By Your Name centers on the summer romance between a 17-year-old American named Elio (Timothée Chalamet) and Oliver (Armie Hammer), a 24-year-old graduate student who is working with Elio’s father (Michael Stuhlbarg). Directed by Luca Guadagnino, the feature features strong chemistry between the leads and a finely tuned screenplay from James Ivory.

Below is Hammer’s take on why the connection between Elio and Oliver strikes a chord:

“It’s a wonderful progression of watching two human beings become more and more sort of enthralled with each other and finally feeling comfortable enough to open themselves up completely and say ‘this is actually who I am’ and then having that received and reciprocated is such a wonderful thing that we all want or have been lucky enough to experience and remember.

I think that’s why this movie connects with so many people. Because regardless of your orientation or your identification, you’ve felt those feelings before of being totally incapacitated by this feeling of want and desire for another person. And then having that kind of come to fruition and then maybe having it go away. Those are base, human emotions that everyone has dealt with and I think that’s why a lot of people are connecting with the movie.”
