‘American Crime’ Delivers “Cascade Effect” With Immersive Storylines

Along with its deft and balanced handling of topical issues, American Crime explores the fabric of humanity from different locations. The third season, premiering tonight, takes place in Alamance County, North Carolina, as immigration, sex trafficking, and class struggles are all part of this eight-episode universe.  During this year’s ABC TCA panel, the ensemble and creator John Ridley gave us a preview of this highly anticipated season.

Season three includes Luis Salazar’s (Benito Martinez) quest to find his messing son, a search that leads him to land a job at a tomato farm in North Carolina. Coy Henson (Connor Jesup) is a drug addict who also works in the same horrible conditions thanks to a compromised crew boss (Richard Cabral). Felicity Huffman co-stars as a wife of one of the farm owners who investigates the horrible treatment of the workers, with fellow American Crime staple Regina King playing a social worker who’s focused on helping out a 17-year-old prostitute (Ana Mulvoy-Ten).

“In terms of the issues that we try to address, a lot of it is really predicated on issues or circumstances or individuals that we felt perhaps we didn’t address in the previous season,” said Ridley. “There are so many voices out there that normally are not given any kind of platform. So to look at the work that we’ve done, have the opportunity to actually look back on three seasons, and to try to identify spaces in the social system, the connectivity that is in and among us that oftentimes we’re not even aware of ourselves, and to try to represent a cascade effect between the things we do and the people that we not know but whom we affect, I think that is what we try to accomplish and do it in a way that is representative of the country that we live in.”

Though the role was an “absolute pleasure” for Ana Mulvoy-Ten, playing a 17-year-old prostitute was, understandably, a role that was hard to shake off. “I just think it’s really wonderful for John to write a character like that because it’s not easy to watch,” said Mulvoy-Ten. “It’s not an easy character to play either. I had – sometimes I’d get home from work and I’d have to go on a run at midnight . . . because I was so overwhelmed with everything I was feeling, playing her.”
