Linda Purl and Patrick Duffy support each other as partners in life and work with their recent Hollywood Grit collaboration. A film noir dramedy filled with jazz and standout performances, the feature boasts memorable work from both actors. Purl is a hard driving jazz club owner who will do anything to keep her business thriving, and Duffy plays her husband Clarence, the club’s co-owner who simply wants to ride off into the sunset and retire. The characters are part of the twisted and deadly web behind Hollywood Grit, as they may hold the key to a jazz singer’s (Ysabela Espinosa) disappearance. Purl and Duffy talked to Deepest Dream about the film, working together, and their new venture Duffy’s Dough.

Linda Purl credits much of Hollywood Grit’s effectiveness to director/co-writer Ryan Curtis. “Everybody got behind the vision of the director and the cinematogragher and all of the designers. (Hollywood Grit) was funny. It was smart. So if we as actors, if we stuck to the script, we were in good shape.”

Patrick Duffy pointed out that sometimes even the best film noirs of yesteryear were done as a “second studio choice.” That “grit” and the rough edges around an indie feature like Hollywood Grit gives the film an authentic noir feel. “Like Linda said, our acting styles didn’t change that much in terms of what we were doing,” added Duffy. “But the framework around which you do it made it so much fun.”

Duffy and Purl have also started their own sourdough business called Duffy’s Dough. All of the profits go to food scarcity and currently Duffy’s Dough can be found in Kroger stores in Ohio.

“It’s basically Linda’s baby,” said Duffy. “It’s my sourdough starter, but it’s Linda’s concept that got it off the ground and where it is. Then the combination of that and the fact that we get to do something with our lives by virtue of that enterprise, which is to give a hundred percent of the profits to charity.”

“We started (Duffy’s Dough) in our garage about four years ago, and we could never have imagined that we are where we are,” said Purl. “Kroger took us on and they’re baking our breads. We have five varieties of sourdough. It’s on the shelves in Ohio.”
