After last year’s family hit Wonder, Julia Roberts is winding down 2018 in a big way with two projects (Ben Is Back, Amazon’s series Homecoming). The full trailer of Ben Is Back is featured after the jump.

Directed and penned by Peter Hedges, Ben Is Back centers on Holly (Julia Roberts), a woman who is relieved that her 19-year-old son Ben (Peter’s son Lucas Hedges) has returned home on a Christmas Eve morning. Ben’s struggles to stay sober, along with some revealed truths, lead to a turbulent 24 hours for Holly’s family (Courtney B. Vance and Kathryn Newton round out the ensemble).
Peter Hedges’ previous works (Pieces of April, Dan in Real Life, The Odd Life of Timothy Green) have all received their share of acclaim (I really dug Pieces of April and Dan in Real Life but haven’t seen The Odd Life of Timothy Green), and it will be interesting to see if Peter’s collaboration with his son is a successful one. Lucas is on a roll thanks to Manchester by the Sea, Lady Bird, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and odds are this movie should be another solid drama from Peter Hedges.
The trailer suggests a narrative that is absolutely tragic and melodramatic, and Ben Is Back is a film that, even if it works, should be an emotionally draining experience.
Check out the trailer and feel free to comment if Ben is Back will be a movie you’ll be more than willing to check out!
Ben Is Back opens in theaters December 7.
