Mat Franco’s career was forever changed as the season 9 winner of NBC’s competition series America’s Got Talent, and now his two-hour special Mat Franco’s Got Magic premieres tonight on NBC. Neil Patrick Harris, AGT judge Heidi Klum, New England Patriots Tight End Rob Gronkowski, and illusionists Penn & Teller are among the guests.
During the special, Franco will travel from his Rhode Island digs to Las Vegas, all the while stopping off at various locations and performing magic to celebrities, everyday people, and to anyone who’s looking for a bit of “magic” in their lives. The special culminates with him as a headlining act in Sin City at The LINQ Hotel & Casino.
During the NBC/Universal Press Day, I talked to Mat Franco about the film The Prestige, which featured two illusionists whose motivations are entirely different (the Hugh Jackman character wants to entertain the audience, while Christian Bale’s illusionist is determined to executive the most sublime and complex magic trick). I asked which of aesthetic applied to the way he approaches his craft:
