Directed by Lorcan Finnegan (“Nocebo”), “The Surfer” centers on the titular man (Nicolas Cage) who returns to his beachside hometown with his son (Finn Little). Their surfside excursion is ruined by an alpha male (Julian McMahon) and his aggressive minions, leading the surfer into an emotional tailspin. Upon first glance, “The Surfer” may seem like a straight ahead revenge drama. Though the narrative contains those elements, the storyline swims in surreal waters. By the closing moments, you might be wondering what the heck just happened!

Are all of these events in the surfer’s mind, or is the surfer himself a projection of someone else? I watched the ending twice and I am still a bit confused. As Purkey mentions in his review, the movie exists in an “internal hyper world” of Cage’s character.
“The Surfer” hits theaters Friday, May 2. Let us know if you will be watching this totallyl out there Nicolas Cage feature this weekend!
