Having been a fan of several Angel Studios movies (“Cabrini,” “Sound of Freedom”), I was looking forward to seeing “The Last Rodeo.” The great news is I wasn’t disappointed, and it’s great to see a family drama hit theaters this weekend. Starring Neal McDonough (who also serves as a co-writer and producer) and directed by Jon Avnet (“Fried Green Tomatoes,” “Red Corner”), “The Last Rodeo” is worth a watch on several fronts.

Joe Wainwright (Neil McDonough) is a retired rodeo star who resumes his career after his grandson Cody (Graham Harvey) is stricken with a brain tumor. Sarah Jones co-stars as Joe’s daughter Sally and Mykelti Williamson is Charlie, Joe’s former rodeo partner.
Although going for one “last rodeo” to pay the medical bills sounds like a plan, Joe has not been in the bull-riding circuit for years. His passion for bull-riding has taken a toll on his body and, more importantly, led to family trauma and heartache.

“The Last Rodeo’s” plotline may be predictable, but writers Jon Avnet, Neal McDonough and Derek Presley craft a nuanced enough story to keep viewers engaged. This is a plum role for McDonough, as the tough as nails Wainwright is one of his most memorable roles.
Mykelti Williamson and Sarah Jones lend excellent suppport as well, bringing a welcome level of gravitas to the proceedings.Â
A well told story with great acting, along with some nervewracking bull-riding make “The Last Rodeo” first rate family fare. Check the film out in theaters this weekend and let us know what you think!
