With yesterday’s premiere of the second teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, I offered up a few sarcastic comments on my Facebook account, criticizing director J.J. Abrams penchant for sweeping nostalgia. I also expressed my displeasure over Han Solo and Chewbacca’s appearance during the trailer’s final moments.
But I gave the trailer another chance this morning, and since it’s not a sin to change one’s mind, I have completely gone a different route. It wasn’t John Williams’ score, Darth Vader’s decayed mask, or even Harrison Ford’s re-entrance into the fold. It’s the following Luke Skywalker voiceover that lifted my spirits:
“The Force is strong in my family. My father has it. I have it. My sister has it. You have that power too.
The father/son, master/apprentice theme runs throughout the Star Wars universe, and the trailer’s genius stroke was fading to black for several seconds after Skywalker’s “You have that power too.” The Force, though employed in Lucas’ universe by Jedis and Siths, can be philosophically construed as a universal belief as well as an innate power.
Whether you’re on the light or dark side of this life equation, Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters December 18, 2015.
Here’s a few images for your enjoyment.
