The life of Syd Barrett is spotlighted in filmmaker Roddy Bogawa’s latest documentary Have You Got It Yet? The Story of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd. Co-directed by late cover designer Storm Thorgerson, the project was a labor of love that took over a decade to hit theaters. Thorgerson passed in 2013, and Bogawa talked to Deepest Dream about the documentary and friendship with Thorgerson.

Pink Floyd enthusiasts will gravitate to this documentary and it will provide a deeper knowledge of Syd Barrett’s life. Since Barrett spent most of his post-Pink Floyd and solo artist years in seclusion, it is impossible to truly uncover what lies beneath the surface. That said, insightful interviews with David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Pete Townshend and original band managers Peter Jenner and Andrew King give us a clearer picture of Barrett.

Director Roddy Bogawa’s friendship with acclaimed graphic designer/artist Storm Thorgerson led to the documentary Taken By Storm: The Art of Storm Thorgerson and Hipgnosis.

Their next project would be a documentary on Syd Barrett (at Storm’s suggestion). When Storm was diagnosed with colon cancer, he continued to do interviews for the planned project.

“He wanted to participate as much as he could while his health was in decline,” said Bogawa. “And so that’s how it started. One of the emotional things that I realized was the idea of going to see old friends talking about a long lost friend (Syd Barrett). But then I also realized Storm was saying goodbye to everybody too. It was a pretty emotional kind of project for me.”
