Matthew Yerby Talks Personal Connection With ‘The Dirty South’ And Writing Journey

Matthew Yerby makes his feature directing debut with The Dirty South, a crime thriller centering on a bartender (Willa Holland) who is attempting to keep her establishment from being bought out by the small town’s most powerful businessman (Dermot Mulroney). Shane West plays the criminal who aids her in the quest for more money.

Sue (Willa Holland) barely makes any money as a bartender, and if she doesn’t come up with an exorbitant amount of money in several days, she will lose her father’s (Wayne Pére) bar to Jeb (Dermot Mulroney). Though it can be enjoyed as an escapist crime thriller, the picture also has an authentic feel that absolutely won me over. I asked filmmaker/writer Matthew Yerby if shooting The Dirty South was a personal experience.

“There’s definitely a connection,” said Yerby. “I actually worked at this bar in college. I’m from the Winnfield-Natchitoches area in Louisiana and I played baseball in Natchitoches. I shot the entire film here. My mentor told me a long time ago to write what I know and write what I can produce.”
