I wanted a song that I was really comfortable with, and this is a song I’ve played out so much being a touring musician. So I was comfortable with it. And so I knew that being able to share a song like that, it has a lasting impact because you don’t hear it on mainstream platforms anymore.”

Even with all the praise from the coaches, Matthews was still critical of her rendition. “Even when I walked off the stage, getting all four chair turns, I was still in my own head like ‘It didn’t go this way (and) it wasn’t perfect.’ Watching it back on television allowed me to really process it, because it put the whole story into perspective.”
If you want a closer look into Kayleigh Mattews’ artistic journey, give Hard Road a listen. ”I lived in Nashville until 2025, and my husband and I made a decision to move back to Arizona,” said Matthews, who has been ‘gigging like crazy’ for the past six years. “And I had written a song right before we left, and it was Hard Road, which was talking about the journey of being an independent artist. I had written this song as we were leaving just about how the road is sometimes hard, but I’ve loved every single second of the journey up until this point.”
With her time The Voice, Matthews has seen witnessed an altogether different chapter. “All I’ve ever wanted is just honestly to make music that people wanted to hear and listen to and connect with and tell stories,” added Matthews. “Thats all I’ve ever wanted to do and so getting to kinda see that come into play in this new chapter has really been – honestly it’s life changing.”
