Josh Gad returns as the voice of Bailey in A Dog’s Journey, and this time out Bailey is reincarnated as different dogs to watch over and nurture the life of CJ (Kathryn Prescott). Trent (Henry Lau) is CJ’s childhood friend, and since the pair have been bonded for years, a romance is possibly in the offing.

“I think this story has a lot of powerful themes that are really important.” said Lau, who added director Gail Mancuso, in the true spirit of collaboration, was open to his interpretation of his character. “I think love for your pets, your loved ones, and family. One other theme that stood out to me was no matter how hard your situation is, you can still get through it.  I think everyone after watching this film will feel the same way I felt when I first read the script. I’m just really happy to be a part of such an amazing, heartwarming story.”

Watching an Asian American character in a possible romance is a rarity in American cinema (Crazy Rich Asians and A Simple Favor, both staring Henry Golding, are the exceptions that come to mind), so it will be interesting to see how Lau fares in his Hollywood debut.

More importantly, A Dog’s Journey should definitely appeal to a wide variety of moviegoers. Click on the media bar to hear Lau talk about the emotional rollercoaster of the film.

A Dog’s Journey opens nationwide May 17.
