Gia Crovatin stars in filmmaker Neil LaBute’s new feature Fear The Night. The narrative centers on eight women whose lives are endangeered by several criminals. Trapped in a remote farmhouse in the California hill, the women are trying to ward off the masked intruders. Crovatin, a frequent collaborator with LaBute, talked to Deepest Dream about Fear The Night.

Headlined by Maggie Q, Fear The Night is a B-movie thriller on the surface. I love indie driven projects that explore and enhance the genre, and LaBute adds an intriguing thematic layer to this narrative. I won’t spoil that extra dimension to the movie, but I do dive into the film’s spoilers with Crovatin. If you want to hear Crovatin talk about the movie’s ending, check out our CinemAddicts Patreon.

Eric Holmes gave ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ to Fear The Night. A clip of his review:

Since she was a dedicated miltary veteran, Tess (Maggie Q) stays calm amidst the pressure of the intruders. Mia (Gia Crovatin), the most underappreciated person among the friends, is surprisingly focused under this traumatic experience and she takes on one of the story’s most dangerous tasks.

Part of that mission for Mia is to run to another section of the farmhouse without being discovered and killed by the criminals.

“I did run a lot for this movie,” said Crovatin. “Actually for one of the scenes they had to stop shooting because I totally fell and ate it and got this nasty cut on my legs and I still have the scar to prove it. I really went for it. I guess you could say I’m a little method.”

Crovatin is married to LaBute, and the couple have a three and a half year old child. With the devotion to family as well as COVID lockdown, it would be understandable if the pair let their cinematic and television collaborations take their time.

Within the last year and a half, Crovatin has starred in LaBute’s House of Darkness and Out of the Blue. I asked if there was some kind of “unlock” to their consistent work flow.

Much of that work is possibly inspired by sheltering in place. “We’re locked together in COVID,” said Crovatin. “And we’re creative creatures. There is a lot of fun in coming up with ideas and bantering together. And you’re stuck in the house and you have a screaming baby. So, where can we escape to?”
