After loving the heck out of Fear Street Part One: 1994, I did not expect Fear Street Part Two: 1978 to reach that same level of excellence. I was dead wrong, as the second installment is blessed with excellent performances (Sadie Sink, Emily Rudd, and Ryan Simpkins are the standouts) and pinpoint storytelling from filmmaker Leigh Janiak. Filmmaker Leigh Janiak cites Friday the 13th as an inspiration for Fear Street Part Two: 1978, but Find Your Film co-host Bruce Purkey also sees a bit of a nod to The Goonies in this frightening and refreshingly exacting feature. The lead characters in this installment are sisters Cindy Berman (Emily Rudd) and Ziggy Berman (Sadie Sink). They are part of the Shadysiders who spend the summer at Camp Nightwing with their colleagues and rival Sunnyvalers.
One of the refreshingly awesome aspects of the two Fear Street movies is that viewers will find themselves emotionally attached to certain characters, only to realize that their favorites may not live through this horrifying experience. The kills in Fear Street Part Two: 1978, though not excessively grisly, still managed to turn my stomach.
