Exclusive: Chris Crump Rides ‘The Voice’ Wave With Determined Spirit

Chris Crump’s introduction to The Voice was an auspicious one, as he received a four chair turn for his rendition of the Ed Sheeran tune “Thinking Out Loud.” After picking Blake Shelton as his coach, Crump advanced through the Battle Rounds and now he’s set for the knockouts. With obviously a ton on his mind and a lot to be grateful for, Crump talked about one of the aspects that truly grounds him as a person.

Along with the four chair turn, Crump’s story also sticks out since he and his wife left their wedding reception so that he could actually audition for The Voice. The gamble paid off for the Baytown, Texas musician, and his momentum continued to swing after his Battle Rounds performance of the Brad Paisley tune “When I Get Where I’m Going” with Krista Hughes.

During our interview, I asked Chris Crump about how his love for surfing has influenced him as a person:

“It became my life completely and a lot of musicians will equate surfing to the kind of rush they get when they’re on stage – there’s nothing quite like it. You realize how small you are when you’re out on the ocean and you have to, as in life, bend and move with the way things are going because so often in life we can’t control every little detail of our lives . . . I learned that sometimes you have to go with the flow and you have to see where the tide is going and (with) that I can sit out, surf, and wait on the waves and realize sometimes in life, you have to wait. Then, whenever you see your opportunity, like a wave, you have to be ready for it, know when to take it and most of all not to hesitate and be scared – to go full on into it.”

The Soundcloud audio below contains my full interview with Chris Crump, as he also talked about the challenges of performing “When I Get Where I’m Going” (Crump’s grandfather recently passed away) and the friendly competitions that take place among “The Voice” artists (most notably with his roommate and fellow “The Voice” colleague Barrett Baber):
