With the Fall TV season just around the corner, it’ll be great to see Kiefer Sutherland back on the scene attempting to save the U.S. once again with Designated Survivor. Although he won’t be kicking butt as former CTU agent Jack Bauer this time around, Sutherland finds himself in the more prestigious position as President of the United States! With Sutherland’s star power and an intriguing premise, I’m betting the show will be renewed for a second season.

The series centers on Tom Kirkman (Sutherland), a low level Cabinet member who is the “designated survivor” after an attack on the White House. Kirkman is way in over his head as the new POTUS, but with help from a counterterrorism agent (Maggie Q) and support from his loving, lawyer wife (Natascha McElhone), he may have a fighting chance.

As reported in Collider, one of the interesting facets of Designated Survivor will be its focus on three main storylines, one of which includes the investigation and hunt for the terrorists behind the attack. While Tom’s rapid rise in the political arena will also be documented, his relationship with his wife and family should provide much of the program’s heart and soul.

FOX’s 24 enjoyed a long run and the short-lived Touch even survived it past the first season, so one would assume that Designated Survivor has a few good legs to stand on. Stranger things have happened in television, and whether you’re Jack Bauer or the President of the United States, nothing is ever a sure bet.
