Charlize TheronĀ is no stranger to fantastical, futuristic driven narratives (Prometheus), and now she stars in Mad Max: Fury Road as Imperator Furiosa, a leader of a group who bumps into the road warrior himself, Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy).

Though Max’s story has been chronicled in directorĀ George Miller’sĀ iconic trilogy (Mad Max, The Road Warrior, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome), Furiosa is a new character in Miller’s post-apocalyptic universe. During last week’s press conference, TheronĀ told reporters she was personally “touched” by the role, and even though the film isn’t filled with tons of exposition (in a world where survival is the driving force, who has time for excessive blather?), Furiosa’s story definitely struck a chord with the Oscar winning actress:
“I personally was so touched by this character. Not that it’s really explained in the movie but George (Miller) and I spent a lot of time talking about this. She’s about the most broken woman you can imagine and in many ways she’s almost been a disappointment to what you would consider socially for a woman to be. She ended up being discarded for that.”
