Charlize Theron is a warrior named Andy who leads a group of mercenaries in The Old Guard. The trailer was just released this morning, and there are a couple of reasons why this Netflix movie should be a cut above the average actioner.
Nile (If Beale Street Could Talk’s KiKi Layne) is a new soldier who is recruited into the ranks of mercenaries who have the gift of immortality. Andy (Charlize Theron) is the leader of the unit, and while she tutors Nile on how they conduct business, the mercenaries actually find themselves in danger when their abilities are set to be replicated and monetized.
The screenplay is by Greg Rucka (based on his own graphic novel), so one can bet that The Old Guard’s storyline, amidst all the visceral action, will also be filled with depth (Rucka’s work is revered by comic book readers, and I love his hard boiled noir approach to much of his work, including his interpretation of Batman).
Secondly, Gina Prince-Blythewood, whose films include Beyond the Lights, The Secret Life of Bees, and Love & Basketball, is The Old Guard’s director. She is not the “obvious” choice to direct this action filled/based on a comic book feature, but putting a first rate filmmaker at the helm of The Old Guard is simply a great move. Along with Theron, Layne, and Schoenaerts to anchor the ensemble, this movie may be a keeper. Check out the trailer and tell us what you think!
The Old Guard hits Netflix on July 10.
