If you’re looking for a ridiculous comedy (in a good way) that ultimately wears its heart on its sleeve, then Preschool might fit the bill. Two dads (Josh Duhamel, Michael Socha) want their respective child to be given the last spot at a prestigious preschool. Charity Wakefield and Antonio Thomas are the wives who must endure their guys’ immaturity and selfishness. Wakefield (Wolf Hall, The Great) talked to Deepest Dream about why she loved making the film.

“It was a ball, to be honest with you” said Charity Wakefield, who also credited writer Richard D’Ovidio for not being too precious with the script. “I absolutely loved filming this film. Preschool was always going to be a fun thing to do, but Josh Duhamel let us be free, and he invited us to improvise along the script. We would do the scenes as scripted, and then we were allowed to do several takes where it was unscripted, and then sometimes we’d go back and patch the two together.”

Having acted in film and television for over 20 years, Wakefield is also eyeing a path to directing. She recently directed the promenade play Pattledom, and that interactive experience is just one aspect of her expanding career. “I feel like I just got out of film school,” said Wakefield. “Which is not true, but I’ve done quite a few projects now learning on the job. And again, I’m inspired by Josh because he is someone that is a natural director, but I don’t think he’s had any kind of formal training to do that. He’s had so much experience, obviously on particularly huge productions, and Josh is really a people’s person. He’s interested in what other people are doing.”
