Most of director Luc Besson’s body of work is praised for its visually eye-catching action set pieces and epic scope, but it’s also obvious that his celebration of strong minded and courageous women is a focal point in his storytelling.

Anne Parillaud (La Femme Nikita), Milla Jovovich (The Messenger, The Fifth Element), Rie Rasmussen (Angel-A), Scarlett Johansson (Lucy), and Louise Bourgoin (the woefully underrated The Extraordinary Adventures of Adéle Blanc-Sec) are just a few of the actresses who’ve shined in their collaborations with Besson, and now Cara Delevingne gets her shot with Besson’s upcoming feature Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. The movie is based on the French comic book series Valerian and Laureline with Dane DeHaan and Delevigne playing the formidable duo.

“It’s a long, extremely impressive list of strong female characters and Laureline is that,” said Delevigne, whose credits include Paper Towns and the upcoming Suicide Squad. “She is an extremely strong, independent, hard working, determined individual who is in a wonderful partnership (with Valerian).”
