The One and Only Ivan, based on Katherine Applegate’s bestselling book, centers on a 400-pound silverback gorilla who lives in a suburban shopping mall with various other animals. Bryan Cranston co-stars as Mack, the mall’s owner who develops a bond with Ivan (voiced by Sam Rockwell). Cranston talks about what makes The One and Only Ivan a unique cinematic experience.

Directed by Thea Sharrock (Me Before You), The One and Only Ivan also features the voices of Helen Mirren (Snickers the poodle), Brooklynn Prince (Ruby the baby elephant), Angelina Jolie (Stella the elephant), Danny DeVito (Bob the dog), and Ron Funches (Murphy the rabbit).
Bryan Cranston stated that the film went above and beyond his expectations, and he’s extremely proud of the movie “If there is a drama there is a heavy dose of humor to it and conversely if it’s a comedy, you want some pathos and some sincerity to it,” said Cranston. “This has a beautiful blend. The One and Only Ivan isn’t a comedy. It isn’t a drama. It’s just kind of a real exploration of what an animal might be thinking and feeling and what they’re going through. In doing so, we laugh and we cry and we feel all the way through this film.”
