There is a good news/bad news element behind the new Netflix feature Pain Hustlers. As Liza Drake, a blue-collar single mom who sees her career skyrocket after teaming up with pharmaceutical sales rep Pete Brenner (Chris Evans), Emily Blunt delivers another first rate perofrmance. CinemAddicts co-host Bruce Purkey described the movie as “entertaining enough,” and I concur with that assessment. Check out our CinemAddicts review below!
Although Suitable Flesh biasedly appeals to my nostalgic sensibilities, director Joe Lynch carves out inspired, fertile ground with his latest film. The movie lives in the Re-Animator and From Beyond mniverse thanks to screenwriter Dennis Paoli (he co-penned those H.P. Lovecraft adaptations). Will Suitable Flesh appeal to a broad audience, or does it play to a specialized crowd. I absolutely love this movie; co-hosts Eric Holmes and Bruce Purkey offer up different opinions on the flick. Hitting theaters October 27, the animated feature Inspector Sun centers on a police detective (Ronny Chieng) who is fired after a mission goes sideways. When Dr. Spindlethorp (Scott Geer) receives a threat on his life, Sun gets back into action to tangle with his nemesis the Red Locust (Rich Orlow). Director Julio Soto Gúrpide and producer Adriana Malfatti Chen talked to Deepest Dream about the Spanish production.
Jesse V. Johnson (Avengement, Hell Hath No Fury) is back with possibly his most ambitious feature to date. Boudica: Queen of War is an epic action film about Boudica (Olga Kurylenko), a woman who is forced into subservience after her husband’s (Clive Standen). With her children taken by Roman conquerors, Boudica aims to capture back her homeland. Johnson talked to us about the journey in making Boudica: Queen of War.
One of the movies Eric Holmes recommends this week on CinemAddicts is Onyx The Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls. The movie debuts today for a one night only showing, and for further information you can check out https://www.theonyxmovie.com/.
The three-part documentary series Navajo Police: Class 57 centers on a group of recruits who go through the Navajo Police Training Academy and out into the field. Filmmakers Kahlil Hudson, Alex Jablonski and David Nordstrom captured a year in the life of these recruits. Cinemaddicts co-host Eric Holmes talked to the directors about Navajo Police: Class 57 which debuts today on HBO and Max.
Jeffrey Wright (Westworld, The Batman) stars in Cord Jefferson’s directorial debut American Fiction. The trailer is pretty funny, and the cast is top notch. Check out the American Fiction trailer and share your thoughts!
There is a big caveat regarding the “movie pick” title for Mister Organ. Both Bruce Purkey and I recommend David Farrier’s (Tickled) latest documentary. Eric Holmes, on the other hand, “hated it.” Learn a thing or two about Mister Organ and decide for yourself!
The Royal Hotel centers on Hanna (Julia Garner) and Liv (Jessica Henwick), best friends who are backpacking in Australia. Flush out of cash, the pair take a job as bartenders of a pub (named the Royal Hotel). Set in a remote Outback mining town, the environment is dominated by rowdy locals who don’t believe in personal boundaries. Bruce Purkey and I reviewed the movie this week on CinemAddicts, and we both recommend this Kitty Green directed feature.
No Accident is a new HBO documentary that centers on the lawsuit surrounding the Charlottesville, Virginia “Unite the Right” white nationalist rally in 2017. One person was killed in the incident, and the lawsuit alleged that the rally was created to incite racially motivated violence and to advance an anti-Semetic, race-war agenda. Director Kristi Jacobson has behind the scenes access to the documentary, and she talked to Deepest Dream about the journey of making No Accident.
