Semifinals start on tonight’s Last Comic Standing (NBC, 10 pm et/pt), a show which gives the winning comedian a $250,000 prize package and a development deal for their own television show. Norm Macdonald, Roseanne Barr, and Keenen Ivory Wayans are the judges with Anthony Jeselnik serving as the host.
Though Last Comic Standing is a great opportunity for Jeselnik, his best moments on the show come from his exchanges with the judges.
“Hosting Last Comic Standing, I try to get my lines out of the way as soon as I could and just be able to riff with the judges,” says Jeselnik. “Because that’s fun. Getting to have a battle of wits with Norm Macdonald, that’s much more interesting to me than saying ‘welcome back to Last Comic Standing.'”
During a recent interview I asked Jeselnik what he’s learned from Norm Macdonald. Though he did offer his share of praise, he humorously remarked about being “disappointed” with the comedian.
To catch more of Jeselnik’s brand of humor, his comedy special Anthony Jeselnik: Thoughts and Prayers premieres on Netflix October 16.
*****UPDATE: Also wanted to add Jeselnik’s thoughts on roasting Donald Trump several years back:
I think that roast is timeless. You can show that any day. You can watch it 24-7 and it’s always going to apply to him. I think people are rediscovering it so that’s nice . But I still think I got him. I (would make) the same exact jokes today that I made years ago
You could make fun of his children, you could make fun of his life, you could say you wish he was dead and he would not care at all but if you said ‘you have less money than you say you do’ he would lose his mind. And I love that about him.
