Carly Harvey made it through the Blind Auditions on The Voice with Michael Buble as her coach. Tonight’s Battle Rounds features Harvey facing off against Marty O’Reilly, but this interview discusses Harvey’s general experience on Season 28 of The Voice. She had just finished a speech (which she talks about) and candidly delved into her passion for music and education. Check out our full interview below and be sure to watch The Voice tonight at 8/7c (next day on Peacock)!

The interview started with Carly Harvey elaborating on why she sees herself as a bluesologist. “I actually just did a lecture at MIT about the Native American influence (on blues), and I’m Afro Indigenous,” said Harvey, who last year released the album Kamama. “Those intersections are so precious to me because it is my heritage and lineage, and it’s me expressing myself through that. Hill Country Blues or Piedmont Blues, that’s the predecessor to country music as we know it today.”

“And then there was a more intellectual response to blues, which became jazz,” added Harvey. Then here was a more electrified response to blues, which was rock and roll. And my goal as an artist is to honor the root of blues, including its Native American origins and intersections at the origin of Blues.”
Being an artist and teacher are huge passions for Harvey. While shining a light on music she loves, Harvey also wants to see that reflection in others – even in the middle of a competition! “ I love seeing people strive toward reaching their potential or wanting to grow and expand,” said Harvey. “And some of the contestants did ask me for advice because they’re like, you’re a voice teacher. (That is) just such an inherent part of me. So I was like, ‘I think I can’t do that because like, what if you win?’ I just put that aside. I just wanted to. be in a community with people that (have) a shared goal. And that was such a beautiful experience.”
