‘Ran’ Movie Review – Akira Kurosawa Masterpiece Gets 40th Anniversary Presentation From Rialto Pictures

In Celebration of 40th Anniversary, “RAN” has been re-released in theaters via Rialto Pictures. The 4K restoration is currently playing at several theaters across the U.S. including New York’s IFC Center and Laemmle’s Royal in Los Angeles. Other venues include Austin, TX (Austin Film Society), Santa Barbara, Ca. (SBIFF Riviera Theatre), and Charlotte, NC (Independent Picture House).

A reimagining of Shakespeare’s “King Lear,” “Ran” centers on a Warlord (Tatsuya Nakadal) who decides to carve up his domain and leave it among his three sons. Mieko Harada co-stars as Lady Kaede, a knife wielding manipulator who has her own motivations.
