Jesse V. Johnson (Avengement, Hell Hath No Fury) is back with possibly his most ambitious feature to date. Boudica: Queen of War is an epic action film about Boudica (Olga Kurylenko), a woman who is forced into subservience after her husband’s (Clive Standen). With her children taken by Roman conquerors, Boudica aims to capture back her homeland. Johnson talked to us about the journey in making Boudica: Queen of War.
CinemAddicts co-host Eric Holmes is a huge fan of Jesse V. Johnson, and thanks to Eric I was introduced to his work. I previously interviewed him for Avengement and Hell Hath No Fury, and from those chats I realized he is a huge film buff. Having a big poster of John Boorman’s Point Blank during one of our interviewed absolutely won me over.
That said, Jesse V. Johnson is a throwback director whose films are filled with passionate and visceral storytelling. His work is as varied as Boorman, and his unpretentious and oftentimes bold approach to narrative has shades of Samuel Fuller (Shock Corridor, The Steel Helmet).
During the interview, Johnson talks about why making movies in the zeitgeist is simply not for him, and he prefers to have a “subversive” approach to filmmaking.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!I’m a huge Olga Kurylenko fan and I am excited to check out Boudica: Queen of War (Eric loved it). They previously worked together on White Elephant, and I have to see that one as well.
But first thing’s first; Johnson’s full convo with Eric is below:
