The Angry Black Girl And Her Monster centers on Vicaria (Laya DeLeon Hayes), a teenager who believes death is a disease that is curable. After her brother’s murder, she attempts to resurrect him. Writer/director Bomani J. Story talked about how his tale, inspired by Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, comes from a personal place.
Prior to The Angry Black Girl And Her Monster, Bomani J. Story wrote Rock Steady Row which won the Best Narrative Featrure and the Audience Award at the 2018 Slamdance Film Festival.
Praise is also finding its way to The Angry Black Girl And Her Monster, and its Rotten Tomatoes score is pretty impressive. Though this movie is cinema through and through, it all starts with storytelling.

“It came from the literature really,” said Bomani J. Story. “That was what I was most inspired by. When I read it, I realized that a lot of adaptations that come from this tale, they leave a lot of stuff on the floor that I thought was really interesting. I wanted to do my own version of that. It was a mixture of that and my muse was my two older sisters. With a mixture of all that, it gave me the passion to seek and pursue this story.”
The Angry Black Girl And Her Monster hits theaters June 9 and lands on Digital and On Demand June 23. Our full interview with Bomani J. Story is below:
