Shooting nine pages a day and sometimes having just one or two takes to get a scene right is obviously a challenge. For You Can’t Leave actors Spencer Boldman, Kristos Andrews, and Cameron Inman, that was part of bringing an ambitious independent horror movie to life. Written and directed by Scott Windhauser, the supernatural feature, which for me felt like a satisfying puzzle box, is now playing in theaters. Check out my video interview with the actors below!

You Can’t Leave centers on an understandably worried young man named James (Spencer Boldman). In search of his missing sister Gabby (Cameron Inman) with the help of his friends (Paola Andino, Thomas Bauer) and Gabby’s ex-boyfriend (Kristos Andrews), James uncovers a supernatural nightmare. What happens if one travels through the depths of the forest only to return back to the same isolated, and possibly haunted cabin?
Boldman discussed the production’s limited resources and the pace everyone had to maintain. “When you’re an independent movie, you have a very small budget,” said the actor, who starred in the 2018 feature Cruise. “Whenever you’re up against those kinds of challenges and logistic issues and weather issues and all that, you’re given one, maybe two takes of each scene. We were doing nine pages a day, which is very aggressive, and I am so proud of the movie that we made.”

For Kristos Andrews, who also has experience as a filmmaker, the circumstances made everyone’s contribution especially important. Arriving prepared was essential, and he appreciated how his collaborators responded.
“Everyone had to be on their ‘A’ game to pull this off the right way,” said Andrews. “The stakes are higher in real life to get this, to turn out the right results that really hit, and I felt like they really hit. So I’m really proud of everybody. Everyone brought their best. Everyone put their heart into it.”
That dedication also meant being there for one another throughout production. Cameron Inman, whose character has a standout sequence in the film’s opening, highlighted the time actors put into their craft. “We are very dedicated and work really hard,” she added. “I’ve been doing stuff with Spencer since we were teenagers. … It takes a lot of hard work.”

Ultimately, Boldman hopes that collective effort translates into an enjoyable theatrical experience.
“We were just trying to create a really entertaining movie for people to go to the theater and enjoy before Halloween,” he said. “And I think we did that.”
