There are a ton of reviews that mention a huge plot point in Shelter, and though understandable, I did not divulge that detail in my review. Directed by Ric Roman Waugh (Greenland 2) from a Ward Parry script, Shelter had all the makings of an excellent feature but comes up a little bit short. That said, this action thriller is still a worthy watch. Check out my video review below!

Mason (Jason Statham) is a reclusive man living on a Scottish isle, away from the things of man. His only human contact is a man and his niece, a young girl named Jesse (Bodhi Rae Breathnach).
When a storm hits the isle and tragedy strikes, Mason is tasked with helping Jesse recover from her injuries. This nurturing gesture unfortunately leads to his discovery from a top level government agent (Bill Nighy) who wants him dead.

Naomi Ackie co-stars as a fellow agent who has suspicions about her superior, and Bryan Vigier is the assassin hired to kill Mason.

Shelter’s first act, where we see Mason and Jesse existing on the island, is the feature’s strongest component. Statham and Breathnach work well together, and Breathnach is entirely believable as the distressed youth.
The narrative loses some steam when the pair get to the mainland and try to evade the assassin and other agents. We’ve seen it all before, and better (think The Bourne Identity movies). That said, Shelter exists as a solid enough watch, and this will obviously be an even better experience if you’re a Statham fan.
I’ll watch anything that Statham is in, so Shelter was right up my alley. Although much of the picture is predictable (Nighy and Ackie have undercooked roles), Shelter boasts scene stealing work from Breathnach. Plus, Statham is engaged as usual, so I was definitelly on board.
Shelter hits theaters January 30th. Share your review in the comments!
