Rio Bravo and East of Eden will be available for the first time in 4K resolution with high dynamic range (HDR) in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Warner Bros. Studio. This year-long centennial celebration of Warner Bros. features both movies on 4K Ultra HD Disc and Digital starting July 18.

The Rio Bravo and East of Eden 4K release featured a collaboration with The Film Foundation. Both movies were restored and remastered by Warner Bros. Post Production Creative Services: Motion Picture Imaging and Post Production Sound. The Film Foundation, headed by Martin Scorsese, launched in 1990 and has restored over 900 movies.

The Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc includes the movies in 4K with HDR and a digital version of the movies.

East of Eden extras include commentary by Richard Schickel. Rio Bravo extras include commentary by John Carpenter and Richard Schickel.

Directed by Howard Hawks, Rio Bravo was a 1959 Western starring John Wayne, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson, Walter Brennan, and Angie Dickinson. Released in 1955, East of Eden was directed by Elia Kazan and starred James Dean, Julie Harris and Jo Van Fleet (she won an Oscar as Dean’s mother).

Both movies are must owns in one’s physical media collection, especially if you are a fan of Westerns and well acted family dramas. Schickel passed away in 2017, and it was my pleasure to interview him at his Beverly Hills residence many years ago. He worked quite a bit with Warner Bros., and he was a big reason behind the Warner Bros. release of The Big Red One: The Reconstruction Cut.

Let us know if you are spending your hard earned money for East of Eden and Rio Bravo when they hit 4K Ultra HD and Digital on July 18!
