Though the term “singer-songwriter” is liberally used these days, that description aptly fits The Voice’s Madi Daviswho Pharrell accurately said is an “artist” and “not just some contestant on this show.”

Davis put her stamp on The Voice right from the jump thanks to her performance of the Carole King classic “It’s Too Late.”  She advanced through the Battle Rounds after her “Riptide” duet with Sydney Rhame, and unfortunately that performance was montaged. Nevertheless, Davis’ discerning music taste was evident once again during her first rate Knockouts performance of the Joni Mitchell staple “A Case of You.”

Mitchell and King are two of music’s brightest beacons, and their passion for songwriting as well as following their respective visions are qualities that one would assume inspires Davis. During the interview, I asked Davis about the aforementioned artists and her own journey on The Voice.

Here’s a breakdown of the interview:

:27 How Joni Mitchell and Carole King have influenced her music
1:40 – Her familiarity with “A Case of You”
2:52 – On what she’s learned as a musician during her run on “The Voice.” Plus she discusses the support she’s received from Pharrell
3:59 – Her work on the Guitar Sanctuary and support she’s received from her hometown of McKinney, Texas
5:06 – Creating a song is an “exhilarating” experience – she also gives a ton of credit to the band behind The Voice
6:05On what she’s looking forward to with the Live Playoffs
