Mark Greaney is back with the new “Gray Man” novel “Midnight Black.” This time out, Court Gentry is focused on freeing his lover Zoya Zakharova from imprisonment in a Russian gulag. Greaney talked to Deepest Dream about his thoughts on the Gray Man feature, his early years as a writer, and how he has received invaluable insights from his readers. Check out the full YouTube interview in our post!

“Having garnered a devoted readership through the years, Mark Greaney views his novels from a practical and value added standpoint. “The best compliments I hear from people is when they say that my book helped get them through some tough times,” said Greaney. “Or even, you know, when the power was out. (Or they had a) great night reading or a long plane ride. I’ve always felt like the books are this tangible product. I don’t look at it as this sort of lofty thing and that I’m in some sort of rarefied air because of, of what I do.”

Since my only knowledge of Greaney’s work includes the film adaptation of “The Gray Man” and “Midnight Black” (I’m halfway done with the novel), I asked the bestselling author to recommend another book from his body of work.
“The third book I would consider is one called Sierra Six, which was only a few books ago, but there’s two timelines in the story, and one of the timelines is Court as a younger man, even before the events of ‘The Gray Man,'” said Greaney. “So you see how he was first integrated into a CIA task force, and how some things went wrong in his life and how that affects, as I said, there’s two timelines in Sierra Six, and they relate to one another. They’re like 12 or 15 years apart. And I think that would be like a cool third place to read, because then you see Court as a guy in his early 20s who’s doing this, and then maybe after that you could read them chronologically. But I really pride myself on – you can pick up any ‘Gray Man’ book and have a good time with it.”
