‘Doctor Sleep’ Review: ‘The Shining’ Sequel You Didn’t Know You Needed

Many people, including myself, consider Stanley Kubrick’s version of The Shining to be a classic horror movie. Therefore, a sequel seemed ill-advised and unnecessary, at best, and a disaster-in-the-making, at worst. But, I decided to give this movie a chance and tried to view it with an open mind. After all, Mike Flanagan, the director of Doctor Sleep, has slowly built up a solid resume of horror projects.  Oculus, Hush, and Gerald’s Game were all lean, effective movies. More importantly, Flanagan’s sprawling miniseries remake of The Haunting of Hill House illustrated his ability to tackle and reimagine a beloved film classic.

Ewan McGregor Hints At Healing Of ‘The Shining’ Rift With ‘Doctor Sleep’

For years, I had no idea why, after absolutely loving Different Seasons, another Stephen King book reading experience would never (at least to this day) happen. That answer was found from a Ewan McGregor sound bite from the Doctor Sleep premiere, and it’s featured in the following post.

Don Cheadle Approaches ‘Miles Ahead’ With Non-Linear Fervor

Opening Friday in New York and Los Angeles, Miles Ahead features Don Cheadle as jazz legend and fearless innovator Miles Davis. Trailer: Ewan McGregor Is A ‘Son of A Gun’ & Father Figure To Brenton Thwaites

SOAGPoster1

Ewan McGregor has been a father figure before, especially in the ways of the Force (apologies for the Obi-Wan reference), but with Son of a Gun his mentoring is of the criminal kind.

Brenton Thwaites, up and coming star of The Giver and The Signal, plays JR, a naive criminal who befriends hardened convict Brendan Lynch (McGregor) during a six month stint at a West Australian prison.

Since Brendan provided JR with protection in the slammer, JR returns the favor and busts him out of prison. Life in the fast and illegal lane may be alluring to the youngster, but someone probably should have told him crime doesn’t pay. As the two get involved in a high stakes operation to rob a gold mine, trust issues inevitably surface, leading to an inevitable showdown between the two.

Son of a Gun debuts exclusively on DirecTV on December 11 and hits theaters January 16. The trailer is below:
