Nicolas Wright Talks “Deeply Personal” Approach To ‘French Girl’ Storytelling

French Girl, starring Zach Braff, Evelyne Brochu and Vanessa Hudgens, may seem lke another light and fluffy romantic comedy. Filmmaker Nicolas Wright, however, says the movie is actually a “deeply personal film” for himself and co-director James A. Woods. The pair broke onto the scene in a big way back in 2016 thanks to their Independence Day: Resurgence screenplay. This time out, they make their feature directing debut with French Girl.

French Girl centers on Gordon Kinski (Zach Braff), a Brooklyn high school teacher who travels with his girlfriend/chef Sophie Tremblay (Evelyne Brochu) to Quebec City. Sophie has a new career opportunity thanks to super-chef (and her ex-girlfriend) Ruby Collins (Vanessa Hudgens). Gordon wants Sophie’s hand in marriage, but first he must impress her family and make sure Sophie and Ruby’s relationship is in the distant past.

“We had written this film long before we were involved that sequel,” said Wright. “And it was this deeply personal film for us. This is a love letter to Quebec. As James A. Woods and I met 20 years ago and as we became closer, we realized we had sort of the same background where both of our fathers were English Canadians who married French-Canadian women and started families. And we thought that’s a perfect setting for a romantic love story. How has nobody tapped into this? And so that was kind of the genesis of (French Girl).
