Sophie Turner’s connection to Jean Grey actually started before she landed the coveted role. At the Hollywood premiere of Dark Phoenix, the Game of Thrones actress discussed the “family drama” dynamic of the film

Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) displayed her immense power by literally saving the world in X-Men: Apocalypse. With Dark Phoenix, Grey is now Earth’s biggest threat, and it’s up to her fellow X-Men to end her destructive ways.

“It’s emotional. It’s character driven,” said Turner, who added that it has been a total honor to play Jean Grey. “It’s grounded. It’s almost like a family drama. If you took away all of the fantastical elements, you would still get a fully fleshed out movie which I think is something that’s really exciting.”

Dark Phoenix, co-starring Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender, hits theaters June 7.
